Russian Pacific Ocean fleet harbors at Iran's southern port

Tehran, April 21, IRNA -- A group of Russian Navy warships have harbored at Iran's port city of Bandar Abbas in Hormuzgan Province after a long journey from Pacific Ocean, it was reported Sunday.

The Russian fleet included one Admiral Panteleyev anti-submarine destroyer and two logistic support ships with some 712 personnel on board.

The Admiral Panteleyeve warfare is an Udaloy-class destroyer ('large anti-submarine ship') of the Russian Navy and part of its Pacific Ocean Fleet. She was deployed in 2009 as part of operations to combat piracy off the Somalian coast.

According to the Public Relations Office of Iran's Navy, presence of the Russian fleet in the Iranian port has indicated Tehran-Moscow growing relations and has taken place in line with the two capitals' efforts to promote bilateral naval cooperation in order to maintain security in the regional waters.

While in Badar Abbas, officials of the Russian fleet would meet local officials of the Iranian Navy, said the report.

It added that personnel of the Russian fleet would also take part in some sports games with their Iranian counterparts and visit the Iranian port city during their stay in Bandar Abbas.
