Five Suspects Charged Over Politkovskaya Murder

October 16, 2012

Russian investigators have charged five suspects in connection with the 2006 killing of investigative journalist and Kremlin critic Anna Politkovskaya.

The Russian Investigation Committee said in an October 16 statement that it "has completed the investigation against five defendants -- brothers Rustam, Ibragim, and Dzhabrail Makhmudov, and Sergei Khadzhikurbanov and Lom-Ali Gaitukayev."

The men have been charged with murder and illegal arms dealing.

Politkovskaya, known for her hard-hitting reporting on corruption, the Chechen war, and politics under Vladimir Putin's rule, was shot dead in the hallway of her Moscow apartment building.

Several defendants were tried and acquitted in the killing in 2009, but Russian authorities maintain the investigation is continuing.

Politkovskaya's killing is one of a number of journalist and rights-activist killings from the last decade that remain unsolved.
