Putin: Almost $800 Billion For Military
February 19, 2012
The Russian newspaper "Rossiiskaya Gazeta" on February 20 printed an aticle written by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, also the front-runner in the March 4 presidential elections, in which Putin speaks about military reforms and spending over the next 10 years.
Putin says, "It’s obvious we cannot strengthen our international position, develop the economy and democratic institutions if we are not able to defend Russia."
Putin says over the course of the next 10 years, 23 trillion rubles ($770 billion) will be spent on the Russian military, part of which will be spent on construction of more than 400 new intercontinental ballistic missiles, some 100 military satellites, new vessels for the Navy and new warplanes.
Putin commented on the anti-missile shield the U.S. and its allies are deploying in Europe despite Russian objections saying Russia will provide an "effective and asymmetrical" response to the system.
