Russia Sets Weapons Export Record

February 16, 2012

An official responsible for Russia's foreign arms sales says the country set a weapons export record in 2011 -- despite competition from China and the loss of some Arab clients.

Mikhail Dmitriyev, head of the Federal Service for Military-Technical cooperation, said Russia sold $13.2 billion in arms to foreign clients last year, with India, Algeria, and Vietnam accounting for half of all exports.

State-run arms exporter Rosoboronexport, which accounts for some 80 percent of Russia's overseas arms sales, said earlier this month that it lost billions in sales because of a United Nations arms embargo against Libya under then-leader Muammar Qaddafi.

Violence-torn Syria is one of Russia's biggest clients, with current contracts worth eventual revenues of more than $5 billion.

Russia is the world's second-biggest arms exporter after the United States.
