VLADIVOSTOK, September 23 (RIA Novosti) - An investigation has been opened into the cause of a Sukhoi Su-27 military aircraft crash in the Russian Far East on Monday, a representative of the local investigative department said.

The two Russian Air force pilots, who survived after ejecting themselves from the aircraft before the crash, may face up to seven years imprisonment for violation of flight rules, the representative said.

The flight was the aircraft's first test run after undergoing repair work.

According to preliminary data, the accident was caused by engine failure.

An investigative group is currently working at the scene. The aircraft's flight data recorders have already been delivered for transcription, although a source close to the investigators earlier told RIA Novosti that the recorders had been badly damaged.
