High-tech arms priority for Russia military - first deputy PM
20/02/2007 12:00 MOSCOW, February 20 (RIA Novosti) - Development of state-of-the-art precision-guided weapons is a major priority for Russia's military-industrial complex, a senior government official said Tuesday.
"Without these systems, it is impossible to plan or conduct modern combat operations," said Sergei Ivanov, first deputy prime minister, who oversees Russia's military-industrial complex.
He said precision-guided weapons are used successfully in anti-terrorism operations, among other things.
President Vladimir Putin promoted Sergei Ivanov, seen by many as one of his potential successors, from the position of deputy prime minister and defense minister to first deputy prime minister last Friday.
