Russian Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov played down his country's role in resolving Iran's ongoing nuclear dispute with the West.

"The idea that Russia plays a decisive role does not apply (in Iran's case). We have good relations with Iran but we cannot expect Tehran to follow all of Moscow's suggestions," Ivanov said in an interview with Monday's edition of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

"I am still hoping for a reasonable compromise which Iran would make based on its interests. We have a good proposal. The Iranian leadership has to decide soon," he added.

Ivanov was referring to a proposal by Moscow to conduct Iran's nuclear enrichment on Russian soil.

Iran's nuclear negotiation team is expected to meet with Russian officials on February 16 to discuss the proposal.
