Shooting Reported In Nalchik

18 October 2005 -- There are reports of shooting today in Russia's southern city of Nalchik, where police and security forces said they were conducting special operations to detain suspected militants following last week's attacks.

Alleged Islamic extremists conducted a coordinated series of attacks on police and other government buildings in Nalchik, the capital of Russia's southern republic of Kabardino-Balkaria on 13 October. More than 130 people were reported killed in the fighting.

The Associated Press says that shooting was heard today in three districts of the city, including near a police station in the city center.

The Interfax news agency says that police killed a man early today when he allegedly put up resistance during a document check. Two other men who allegedly resisted managed to escape.
