NO PLANS FOR NEW SPECIAL FORCES ARM, MINISTER SAYS
DUSHANBE, April 5 (RIA Novosti) - No plans to create a new Special Forces Arm exist, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov told journalists in Dushanbe.
"This arm already exists, it is called the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Defense Ministry (GRU), and its special forces are deployed in every Russian military district," Ivanov said.
"GRU forces," the Minister emphasized, "are trained for combat in the environment highly adapted to current realities. One can see it clearly in Chechnya".
According to Mr. Ivanov, many people think that this arm should indeed be created on a national scale, and the special forces of the Defense Ministry, Interior Ministry, Federal Security Service, the Ministry of Justice and other institutions should be amalgamated. "No plans to create a national Special Force exist, and the Defense Ministry has this kind of units for a long time," Mr. Ivanov said.
