RUSSIA WAS READY TO EVACUATE BOTH RUSSIANS AND FOREIGNERS FROM BISHKEK
DUSHANBE, April 5 (RIA Novosti) - Russia was ready to evacuate both Russians and foreigners from Bishkek, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov told reporters after meeting with the president of Tajikistan, Emomali Rakhmonov.
"On March 25, following ransacks and robberies in Bishkek, I took the decision to send four military transports Il-76 for possible evacuation of Russian nationals to the Russian territory in Kyrgyzstan. It is the Kant air base", Ivanov said.
In case of need and requests, we would have evacuated foreign nationals, too, he said. "Fortunately, no extreme necessity has sprung up", Sergei Ivanov stressed.
Asked by journalists why mechanisms of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation were not put to use for settling Kyrgyzstan, he said: "Nobody has applied for help. Planning and doing may be product of wishful thinking".
The Russian defense minister has arrived in Tajikistan for the Rubezh-2005 exercise of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation. It is made up of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Armenia.
