MOSCOW ANTICIPATED KYRGYZSTAN DEVELOPMENTS?
RIA Novosti
ST. PETERSBURG, April 1 (RIA Novosti) - Russia neither missed the Kyrgyz developments, nor betrayed Akayev, head of the international committee of the Federation Council (upper chamber of the Russian parliament) Mikhail Margelov said.
"No, we have not missed the developments in Kyrgyzstan. We just didn't closely follow them. We understood what course they could take and were ready to face any scenario. Russia very closely and quietly worked with the opposition in Kyrgyzstan. But we've never betrayed Akayev," the senator told journalists.
He noted that Russia will be in interaction with all the political forces of all countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States. "Russia is a country of global interests and it is, therefore, impossible to focus on a political force, political party only because it is ruling or declares a pro-Russian stance. We've learnt lessons from our mistakes in Moldova," Margelov said.
He noted that an objective process of change of political generations, initiated by Russia in 1999, is now under way on the CIS space.
"I don't know who will be the next. So far, I don't understand which country is objectively ready for the change of generations. But I do know that the process will continue. It's a different matter that Russia must be ready for such changes. This is why we will interact with all the political forces in every member country of the CIS," the senator said.
Upon the instruction of the PACE political commission Margelov will prepare for the PACE spring session a report on attempts to revise results of the Second World War and justification of Nazism in Europe.
He said that last June Russian parliamentarians initiated work on this report. Its participants are parliamentarians of the Council of Europe, Holocaust Museum in Washington, some Russian and European educational centers.
"Our goal is to describe, sum up and study all the attempts to vindicate Nazism. It goes not only for the recent marching of ex-SS men in Riga, attempts in Western Ukraine to erect a monument to former SS men, suchlike attempts in Croatia. Such attempts are numerous and may be continued," Margelov said.
"We want the CE monitoring commission to also undertake the monitoring of attempts at revising results of the Nuremberg Tribunal. We think that results of the Nuremberg Tribunal are the only court results not to be appealed against," the senator added.
Adoption of a resolution on the report is expected.
