TERRORIST THREAT TO RUSSIA EMANATES FROM NORTH CAUCASUS
MOSCOW, March 9 (RIA Novosti) - The main terrorist threat to Russia emanates, as before, from the bandit formations of the North Caucasian region, Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev stated speaking in the State Duma during the "government hour."
Mr. Nurgaliyev specified that the region accounts for about 90% of terrorist actions.
The Minister stressed that to fight terror in the region the republic's Interior structures have somewhat changed their tactic.
"Special activities in the region are now carried out in a maximally pinpointed manner in order to more effectively fight the militants' leaders," he said.
The Minister went on to say that in 2004 Russia's Interior Ministry halted the operation of approximately 140 legal entities giving material assistance to the terrorists.
According to Mr. Nurgaliyev, last year Russia's Interior Ministry managed to prevent 42 contract assassinations.
Speaking of the results of the Interior Ministry's work in 2004, Mr. Nurgaliyev said that 2.9 million crimes had been solved last year, which was 5% more than in 2003.
According to the Minister, the number of grave crimes diminished, while the number of the solution and prevention of contract crimes increased compared to 2003.
"As many as 45,000 crimes of the past years were solved, and criminal cases were filed against 37 perpetrators and masterminds as a result of the successful work of the system of prevention of contract murders," Mr. Nurgaliyev said.
