BRATISLAVA, February 24 (RIA Novosti) - Russia and the United States will closely cooperate to prevent terrorists from possessing man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS), said official spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry Alexander Yakovenko.
"Russia is taking serious efforts not to let terrorists possess MANPADS," Mr. Yakovenko said at a press conference in Bratislava.
"This is an important aspect of Russian and US active policy in this sphere. The interests of the two countries coincide, therefore, the sides signed an agreement on MANPADS non-proliferation," Mr. Yakovenko noted.
"It means that the two countries will cooperate more closely not to let terrorists seize MANPADS," the Foreign Ministry official spokesman stressed.
According to Mr. Yakovenko, both Russia and the United States are interested in non-proliferation of these systems. "This is an important aspect of the Russian and US policy. The sides agreed to exchange information on this issue," the Russian diplomat said.
In his words, some time ago the CIS countries issued a special statement on the fight against MANPADS proliferation within the framework of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
