RUMYANTSEV ON NUCLEAR COOPERATION WITH CHINA, IRAN
RIA Novosti
MOSCOW, February 17 (RIA Novosti) - Russia is waiting for China's permission to launch the nuclear power plant in Tianwan, head of the Russian Federal Atomic Energy Agency Alexander Rumyantsev told journalists on Thursday.
"The nuclear power plant in China is ready for launching. All depends on our Chinese counterparts. As soon as they give their permission we shall launch the plan because all technical issues are settled," Mr. Rumyantsev said.
Russia is building two power units at the nuclear power plant in Tianwan. Its launch was scheduled for February 17, 2005.
According to Mr. Rumyantsev, an agreement on the return of spent nuclear fuel to Russia will be signed during his visit to Iran in late February.
"We have planned to sign an additional protocol to the interstate agreement on the nuclear waste return with Iran," Alexander Rumyantsev noted.
In his words, "nuclear fuel is delivered to a nuclear power plant six months before the physical launch of the reactor."
This rule will be observed at the Iranian nuclear power plant in Bushehr, he added.
