Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

U.S. INTENTION TO CONTINUE ANTI-TERRORISM FIGHT SUITS RUSSIA

RIA Novosti

MOSCOW, February 3 (RIA Novosti) - The U.S. foreign policy priorities voiced by President George Bush in his State of the Union Address indicate further constructive cooperation between Russia and the U.S. in the fight against international terrorism and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), Konstantin Kosachov, chairman of the State Duma Committee on Foreign Affairs, opined in response to the address delivered by the U.S. president.
Mr. Kosachov was positive on Mr. Bush's intention to carry on setting up international coalitions in the coming four years to combat the threats endangering the world.
"This is quite in line with Russian plans and provides a promising opportunity for cooperation between Russia and the United States, the two countries drawn to each other by their determination to stand up to new challenges," Mr. Kosachov said.
At the same time, he stressed that President Bush "was not very convincing when he said that his nation was the active force of good in the world," Mr. Kosachov said. He emphasized that the U.S. had made many miscalculations, including those in the Middle East and Iraq.
In addition, the list of threats to be handled in the fight against international terrorism - Iran, Syria and North Korea - confirms that the U.S. "still prefers fighting regimes, rather than bandits," Mr. Kosachov stressed.
Mr. Bush calling Iran "the main sponsor of terrorism in the world" indicates that "the presidential address was, probably, written by propagandists, rather than analysts," Mr. Kosachov said.
At present, it is not necessary "to seek new targets, but to work out a concerted world community strategy in the Middle East that undoubtedly would make the world a safer place. Compiling various lists of the doomed will not," he concluded.
