RUSSIAN DEFENSE MINISTER VISITS SIBERIAN MILITARY DISTRICT

MOSCOW, February 2 (RIA Novosti) - Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov flew to Tomsk on Wednesday morning to start his working visit to the Siberian military district.
Sources in the defense ministry told RIA Novosti that Mr. Ivanov planned to inspect several brigades of the district in Chita, Abakan and Yurga to monitor personally the process of the transition to contract service in the units and formations of constant combat readiness. In addition, the minister will inspect the implementation of the federal monetization law (exchange of benefits for cash payments) in the army.
On the eve of the visit, during a meeting between the Russian President and the Cabinet members, Mr. Ivanov announced that during his tour of the Siberian military district he would focus on social issues.
"The military personnel in Siberia benefited from the monetization law in terms of the use of public transportation," Mr. Ivanov underlined.
The agenda of the visit includes working meetings with governor of the Tomsk region Viktor Kress, governor of the Kemerovo region Amangeldy Tuleyev, Khakasian prime minister Alexei Lebed and governor of the Chita region Ravil Geniatulin.
