  • Saakashvili Hails Agreement On Russian Troop Withdrawal RFE/RL 31 May 2005 -- Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has hailed an agreement reached with Russia to pull its remaining forces out of Georgia by 2008.
  • Russia Agrees To Pull Troops From Georgia By 2008 RFE/RL 30 May 2005 -- Russia and Georgia have signed an agreement on the withdrawal of Russian military bases from Georgia by 2008. The presence of the troops has bedeviled Russian-Georgian relations for the most part of the last decade. The agreement was signed in Moscow by Georgian Foreign Minister Salome Zourabichvili and her Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.
  • Russia: Putin Takes Steps To Help Cossacks Restore Some Of Their Former Status RFE/RL 27 May 2005 -- Cossack leaders received Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Don region this week to discuss the revival of the legendary Tsarist cavalry corps. Putin in April submitted a bill to the State Duma that would allow Cossacks to serve as soldiers, police, and border guards.
  • Environmentalists Urge Putin To Drop Nuclear Plans RFE/RL 26 May 2005 -- Russian environmentalists have called on the government to review its energy policy and give up plans to build dozens more nuclear reactors in Russia, warning that perceived corruption and incompetence in the industry could lead to a massive nuclear catastrophe.
  • Moscow urging Iran, EU to reach an agreement in nuclear talks: Lavrov IRNA 21 May 2005 -- The Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said here Saturday that Moscow is urging Iran and EU trio (France, Germany and Britain) to reach an agreement in their talks on Iran's nuclear program.
  • Russia: Court Clears Soldiers Of Murder In Chechnya RFE/RL 20 May 2005 -- A jury in a Russian military court has found soldiers from an elite military unit not guilty of murdering six Chechen civilians at a checkpoint in Chechnya in 2002.

  • Russian FM: Nuclear coop with Iran, N Korea to continue IRNA 13 May 2005 -- Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said here Thursday that his country will continue peaceful nuclear cooperation with Iran and North Korea.
  • U.S./Russia: Zbigniew Brzezinski Assesses U.S.-Russia Relations RFE/RL 11 May 2005 -- /RL's Romania-Moldova Service interviewed former U.S. national security adviser under the Carter administration Zbigniew Brzezinski on the eve of President George W. Bush's visit to Moscow to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II. The Polish-born Brzezinski talked about Russia's "imperial nostalgia," Vladimir Putin as the "final gasp of the Soviet era," and what he describes as U.S. efforts to "promote geopolitical pluralism" in the former Soviet Union.
  • U.S., Russian Experts Complete Nuclear Site Security Upgrades Washington File 10 May 2005 -- The United States and Russia announced the completion of comprehensive security upgrades at the Kurchatov Institute, a leading nuclear research center in Moscow, May 5.
  • Putin Calls CIS Vital For Terror Fight RFE/RL 09 May 2005 -- Leaders of the 12-nation Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) gathered in Moscow yesterday on the sidelines of celebrations to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who headed the summit, reaffirmed the pertinence of the CIS and called on its members to join forces in fighting terrorism.
  • Russia: FSB Hoping To Put Revolution On Hold? RFE/RL 02 May 2005 -- Dmitrii Frolov, a top Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) official, told legislators in Russia this week that the service considers it necessary to increase its control over the Internet on the grounds that it is winning "an ever larger audience and becoming a serious player on the information field capable of shaping public opinion." Frolov also called for the mandatory registration of mobile phones with Internet access. While the FSB's calls for greater regulation of the Internet is hardly new, its appeals had previously been based on the need to stem the spread of pornography and information about how to build bombs and other explosives, according to gazeta.ru on 28 April.
