IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Moscow, April 1, IRNA -- Russian Nuclear Energy Organization announced on Thursday that Moscow adheres to its commitments towards Tehran in completing the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) project. Asked to comment on the US congress` call on Moscow to stop nuclear cooperation with Tehran, the Organization spokesman Nikolai Shingarev said that considering its political nature, any comment on or interpretation of the issue rest with Russian foreign affairs ministry. "I for one and on behalf of Russian Federation`s Nuclear Energy Organization, should emphasize that we abide by our international commitments," said Shingarev. Shingarev said that only certain political decisions may reverse the process. He said the decisions, however, need to be backed by certain solid proofs in order to be taken into consideration. He quoted Russian Nuclear Energy Organization Chief Alexander Rumyantsev as saying that there had been no proof or evidence at hand to substantiate Iran attempts to produce nuclear arms. Shingarev reiterated that there is no reliable evidence available to point Iran`s nuclear program is for military purposes. Asked whether Rumyantsev will pay a visit to Iran per a pre- determined schedule, Shingarev said that presently, the issue is not on Moscow`s agenda because the dissolved Russian Nuclear Energy Ministry`s transition was in stage of transition to the Nuclear Energy Organization. He said that evidently, once the Organization has started new mission the exact timing of the visit will be set. Rumyantsev had on Wednesday stressed continued nuclear cooperation between Tehran and Moscow, calling Iran as the strategic partner of Russia. 216/216 End
