Russia vows to continue nuclear cooperation with Iran
PLA Daily 2004-02-26
MOSCOW, Feb. 25 (Xinhuanet) -- Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko Wednesday reiterated Russia's promise to continue cooperating with Iran in the field of nuclear energy.
Yakovenko said Russia supports the right of Iran to develop nuclear technologies for peaceful uses and that Russia will stand by its commitments "in full" to build a nuclear power plant in Iran's coastal city of Bushehr.
"Russia ... is doing its utmost to speed up the commissioning of the station," Yakvenko said.
The United States says the nuclear plant, costing 800 million US dollars, is being used as a cover to develop nuclear weapons and Washington has urged Russia to freeze the project.
Russia has vowed to continue to fulfill the contract with Iran but has said it will not ship any fuel for the plant until Iran signs a deal promising the return to Russia of spent fuel that can be used to develop nuclear weapons.
