Submarine rescue offer extended, says SACLANT
By the Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic (public information office)
NORFOLK, Va. (NWS) -- Officials from NATO (North
Atlantic Treaty Organization) have extended an offer of
assistance to the Russian government regarding the submarine
rescue operation ongoing in the Barents Sea.
As a result of that offer, Russian officials have
responded that they would like to discuss possible options
and technical details of such operations. That technical
meeting occurred late Aug. 15 with NATO headquarters and
officials from the Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic
(SACLANT).
No official request is currently held by SACLANT or NATO
officials.
By coincidence, NATO naval planners at SACLANT
headquarters in Norfolk, Va., are in the final stages of
planning a submarine rescue exercise, called "Sorbet Royal,"
which is scheduled to begin Sept. 5. This exercise will
bring together NATO naval assets that might be called upon
for any real-world submarine accident. Preparations for this
exercise have been very helpful in responding to the
Russian's request for additional information on NATO naval
capabilities for submarine rescue.
