Press Release #10
March 5, 1998
The following are excerpts from the transcription of the Russian Foreign Ministry press briefing on March 5, 1998:
RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY OFFICIAL SPOKESMAN: "Russian-Iranian cooperation pursues only peaceful, civilian goals."
"Cooperation between Russia and Iran is "transparent." It pursues exclusively peaceful, civilian goals and not only in the nuclear but in many other areas."
"Both the Iranian side and, naturally, Russia are prepared for any international guarantees and any inspections."
"There is no evidence of cooperation between Russia and Iran in areas or matters which could be considered as even potentially threatening assistance in the creation of weapons of mass destruction." " We have repeatedly said at various levels, including at the highest one, that we are interested in developing large-scale cooperation with Iran in commercial and economic areas. This is mutually beneficial cooperation aimed at serving the interests of the people of our nations."
"The accusation that Russia at the state level cooperates or assists Iran in making missiles or weapons for mass destruction are baseless." " We hope that this topic will gradually fade out."
