Moscow, 22 April (Itar-Tass) -- Acting Russian Defence Minister Marshal Igor Sergeyev is on an inspection visit on Wednesday [22 April] to the space missile defence army based in Solnechnogorsk near Moscow. In late 1997, the troops integrated into the strategic-purpose missile force. The army is one of the most secret objects of the Russian Armed Forces. It ensures control in the space over the northern hemisphere and provides information about launchings of ballistic and strategic missiles. The forces and means of the army put Russia's anti-missile defence system into action.
The main systems of warning about missile attacks are located in the areas of the cities Olenegorsk (the Murmansk region), Pechora, Skrunde (Latvia), Baranovichi (Byelorussia), Mukachevo (Ukraine), Gabala (Azerbaijan) and Balkhash (Kazakhstan). The main radar station and computer complex are in the region of the town of Fryazino near Moscow. Under a 1972 agreement on anti-missile defence limits, the industrial and economic region of Moscow can have up to 100 anti- missile rockets equipped with nuclear warheads.
