GCC10 TEXT: PRESIDENT'S LETTER TO GORE-CHERNOMYRDIN COMMISSION

(Text: White House release) (420)
(The following letter from President Clinton was released March 11,
1998, by the White House Office for the tenth meeting of the
U.S.-Russian Joint Commission on Economic and Technological
Cooperation, also known as the Gore-Chernomyrdin Commission.)
THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON
March 9, 1998
On this tenth anniversary session of the Joint Commission on Economic
and Technological Cooperation, I extend warmest congratulations to
Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin, Vice President Al Gore, and all
the Ministers, Cabinet Secretaries, and officials of both the Russian
Federation and the United States who have contributed to the
Commission's unprecedented success. Since President Yeltsin and I
agreed to the concept of the Joint Commission at Vancouver in April
1993, Vice President Gore and Prime Minister Chernomyrdin have worked
diligently to expand areas of cooperation and to advance concrete,
practical, joint projects that have touched the lives of the people of
Russia and America and brought our two great countries closer
together.
The Commission's creative work in areas such as trade and investment,
defense conversion, energy development, science and technology, space
exploration, agriculture, environment, and public health has become an
indispensable tool in our bilateral relationship and a model for the
post-Cold War world. Time and again, the Commission has demonstrated
the dynamism and potential of the U.S.-Russian partnership. It has
shown that, by working together, our two governments can find common
ground to resolve difficult problems, to achieve results that benefit
our people, and to advance the interests of Russia and the United
States.
I extend best wishes for every success to Prime Minister Chernomyrdin,
Vice President Gore, and all the senior officials and working-level
experts who will participate in the Commission's tenth session. You
are addressing issues vital to our two countries and important to the
entire world.
(signed) Bill Clinton
