RUSSIA COOPERATES WITH IRAN NOT TO THE DETRIMENT OF THIRD COUNTRIES
MOSCOW, DECEMBER 25

FROM RIA NOVOSTI CORRESPONDENT YURY ALEXEEV--

Moscow sets major store by relations with Iran that develop without any infringement on third countries' interests, said Deputy Foreign Minister Viktor Posuvalyuk at a briefing in Moscow today. In his words, Russia is more than others interested in sustaining the civilised boundaries of cooperation with Iran, ensuring favourable conditions for a dialogue with that country not only for itself but for Western countries as well. Evidence of this, said Posuvalyuk, is that Russian Foreign Minister Yevgeny Primakov, when on a visit to Teheran, initialled a memorandum on control over exports, which, in the opinion of the Russian side, pulls Iran close to the international scheme of non-proliferation of "sensitive" materials, mass destruction weapons and means of their delivery, as well as the joint Russian-Iranian declaration on Tajikistan and Afghanistan.

Loyal to the agreements signed, Russia continues military cooperation with Iran and helps build a nuclear plant on light-water reactors in the Bushire district.

Commenting on the results of Teheran discussion on the status of the Caspian Sea, Posuvalyuk reported that the sides agreed to speed up the formation of a Russian-Iranian-Turkmen company on the development of mineral resources. Understanding was reached on the need for Russia and Iran to continue interaction with all Caspian states for the sake of making consensus decisions on the legal status of the Caspian sea.
