RODIONOV MILITARY THREAT SOURCES DO EXIST AROUND CIS BORDERS AND THEY CAN TRANSFORM INTO NATURAL MILITARY CONFLICTS, RUSSIAN DEFENCE MINISTER STATES

MOSCOW, 25 DECEMBER, RIA NOVOSTI'S ALEXEI MESHKOV -

"There exist military threat sources around CIS borders, which, under certain circumstances, can transform into natural military conflicts", Russian Defence minister Igor Rodionov told an international scientific conference, 'Promotion of Strategic Partnership and Military and Political Integration Among CIS Member States', in Moscow today.

According to the minister, these military threat sources for CIS countries are based on territorial claims of other states, eventual hotbeds of local wars and military conflicts at close quarters from CIS borders, possibility of proliferation of nuclear and other mass destruction weapons, means of their delivery, and existence of updated technologies in the military sphere.

These sources also include unreasonable build up of the military power by other states and military and political unions. In this respect, Igor Rodionov stated that NATO efforts for its eastbound expansion can be treated as a serious challenge to the world of today, which can transform into a serious military threat. The same also can be said about the recent activities of several Asian countries, such as Turkey, Iran, Japan and China, aimed at expanding the zones of their own influence, lessening the significance of CIS member states in many regional problems and repeated using of forced methods to settle many sorts of differences.

All the above-mentioned, according to the minister, suggests the necessity for a joint effort within the CIS structure to release internal military threat, be able to withstand it, and to repel it if the situation requires so. (gar/lnv)
