Russian Duma Passes Law On Destruction Of Chemical Weapons
Date: 27 December 1996

MOSCOW, Dec 27 (Interfax) - The Russian State Duma passed a law on destruction of chemical weapons in a 345-0 vote with one abstention Friday.

The law provides a legal framework for the destruction of chemical weapons on Russian soil and for the safety of people and the environment in doing so.

Chemical weapons on Russian soil "will be destroyed," the law says.

The schedule of this work will be submitted by the government to the president for approval. The sequence and scale of storing, moving and destroying chemical weapons will be determined by the government in coordination with the Russian internal republics and regions where the weapons are stored and are to be destroyed.

The authors of the law say it confirms Russia's resolve to honor its commitments under the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Accumulation and Use of Chemical Weapons and on Their Destruction.

The annual costs of eliminating the weapons will range from 93 billion to 129 billion rubles, depending on the areas where the destruction facilities are situated.
