General Denies Nuclear Construction in Urals

INTERFAX 18 Apr 96

MOSCOW, Apr 18 (Interfax) -- The commander of Russia's missile forces, Col. Gen. Igor Sergeyev, has denied allegations that an underground anti- nuclear bunker is under construction outside the city of Beloretsk in Bashkortostan near the Yamantau Mountain. "No construction connected with the deployment of nuclear arms is underway either in the area of the Ural Mountains or in other parts of Russia, and we are prepared to prove this on all levels," the general told Interfax on Thursday.

The Americans have already carried out about 100 inspections of Russian military nuclear facilities falling under the START-I agreement, Sergeyev pointed out. "The inspections were very thorough, but no complaints concerning nuclear forces were made," the general said. Russia is not planning to build any new facilities for the stationing of nuclear arms, the general said. At present the missile forces are engaged in modernizing intercontinental ballistic missiles of the Topol type, he said. In future, they will be replaced with more advanced Topol-M missiles, Sergeyev said.
