S. Korea-Australia Defense Ministerial Meeting Held on the Sidelines of the 12th ADMM-Plus

Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back met with Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defense Richard Marles on the sidelines of the 12th ADMM-Plus on November 1 (Saturday), where they discussed bilateral defense cooperation and strategies to enhance defense and defense industry collaboration between Korea and ASEAN.
Minister Ahn stated that Australia is South Korea's traditional ally and was the second country, after the United States, to deploy troops during the Korean War. He highly regarded the steady evolution of the bilateral relationship as a comprehensive strategic partnership (CSP), which now spans various sectors including the economy, culture, and human exchanges.
Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles said that South Korea is a core partner sharing values and interests with Australia and the wider Indo-Pacific region. He expressed his expectation for closer cooperation between the two countries in defense and defense industry sectors
Minister Ahn Gyu-back and Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles agreed to further develop bilateral relations across various areas, including high-level exchanges, combined training exercises, advanced technology sharing, and defense industry cooperation.
Minister Ahn particularly emphasized South Korea's advanced defense industry capabilities, highlighting its world-class firms with extensive experience in marine sectors. He proposed diversifying defense cooperation to include shipbuilding, maintenance, and repair.
