South Korea on Monday launched a large Dokdo-class transport ship at the Busan shipyard of Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction, which built the vessel.
The launch ceremony was attended by key officials including Defense Minister Song Young-moo and Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Um Hyun-seong.
The 14-thousand-ton vessel named Marado is the Navy's second large-scale transport ship after the Dokdo of the same class. It is 199 meters long, 31 meters wide and can sail at a maximum speed of 23 knots or about 41 kilometers per hour.
It can carry one thousand troops as well as armored vehicles, helicopters and two air-cushioned landing craft.
The Marado will be delivered to the Navy by the end of 2020 after trial operations.
Named after the nation's southernmost island of Mara, the transport ship is expected to serve in various capacities including disaster rescue, evacuation of overseas Korean residents and international peacekeeping operations.
