Seoul Poised to Enhance Posture Against Pyongyang 'Threats'
South Korea intends to enhance its ability and readiness to respond decisively to any provocations and threats emanating from the North next year, the South Korean Ministry of National Defense said Monday.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Earlier in the day, South Korean Defense Minister Han Min-koo held a meeting with top army commanders devoted to the results of 2015. During the meeting the participants of the meeting also discussed the military policy plan for 2016.
'Our defense forces will be maintaining a strong military capacity to respond decisively to any North Korean provocations, including threats, connected with nuclear weapons, weapons of mass destruction,' the plan, published on the ministry's website, reads.
According to the plan, the Defense Ministry and Joint Chiefs of Staff will jointly develop a set of measures to counter terrorism and maintain a firm readiness to contain North Korean nuclear tests and long-range missile launches.
South Korea also plans to establish a military cybertechnology research center in order to prevent the country from growing cyberattacks. According to the ministry, Seoul intends to deepen its military and space cooperation with Washington, including through the holding of joint military exercises in 2016.
South and North Korea officially remain at war, as no peace treaty was signed after the Korean War of 1950-1953.
