Seoul claims N.Korean plot to assassinate defense minister
11:03 10/08/2011 MOSCOW, August 10 (RIA Novosti) - North Korea is planning to assassinate South Korean Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin, who is famous for his tough response to the North's attacks, Yonhap said on Wednesday.
Pyongyang has sent hitmen to Seoul to target Kim, a South Korean government source told Yonhap news agency.
"The defense minister is a key official and we're always keeping close tabs on his security," a source told Yonhap. "When he has to leave the office for functions and other commitments, we do take extra care."
"It's unclear whether the North has sent its own agents, hired foreigners or assigned the mission to its moles working in the South," Yonhap quoted the source as saying.
South Korea refused to comment on the news, but however tightened security measures for the country's top officials.
Kim Kwan-jin criticized the North after its artillery attack in the Yellow Sea when Pyongyang shelled the South's Yeonpyeong Island in November 2010, killing four people.
