SOUTH KOREAN MINISTER TO DISCUSS ISSUES OF MILITARY AND TECHNICAL COOPERATION IN MOSCOW
RIA Novosti
MOSCOW, April 18 (RIA Novosti) - A delegation of the South Korean ministry of national defense, headed by minister Yoon Kwang-woong, is coming to Russia on April 20 to hold talks with the Russian ministry of defense, the Russian ministry of defense reported on Monday.
On April 22 Yoon Kwang-woong will meet with his Russian counterpart Sergei Ivanov.
"It is a regular visit of the Korean delegation, and the talks with Yoon Kwang-woong will be held within the framework of our international agreements. The Russian and Korean ministers will discuss short-term prospects for military and technical cooperation," the interlocutor said.
South Korea's interest in Russian armament has grown recently, the source added.
"Earlier, the priority subject of our talks was Russia's debt reimbursement via supplies of arms, but today the Koreans are interested in new forms of bilateral cooperation," the spokesman remarked.
In 1991 Seoul offered a $1 billion bank loan and a $470 million commodity loan to Moscow. However, in 1992-1994 Russia was unable to service its foreign debt, which increased to $2.24 billion. In 1996-1997 Russia provided South Korea with a large supply of armament, including 33 BMP-3 infantry combat vehicles and T-90 tanks, to pay off its foreign debt.
