Koreas negotiate border travel security

2004-01-28

The Koreas opened three days of talks on Tuesday aimed at resolving differences over how to guarantee the security of cross-border travelers, South Korean officials announced on Tuesday (Jan. 27).

The meeting in the North's border town of Gaeseong is a continuation of months-long efforts to resolve the dispute. Similar talks last year failed to make headway.

As inter-Korean exchanges and cooperation continue to increase, larger numbers of South Koreans are crossing the heavily fortified border into North Korea for tourism and business. A fewer number of North Koreans travel to South Korea.

An average of 1,500 South Koreans stay in North Korea each day and the number will increase drastically when a large-scale industrial complex is built in the North for South Korean firms this year, officials at the South Korean Unification Ministry said.
