S-N Military Talks Held

003-12-01

Military officials of the two Koreas held talks Friday to resolve the remaining differences over their initial agreement to establish guard posts in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

Last year, the two countries agreed to build guard posts at their respective construction sites for two inter-Korean railways, the Gyeonggi line in the western part of the peninsula and the Donghae line in the east, inside the DMZ that bisects the Koreas.

The posts were designed to ensure the safe passage of trains and vehicles across the border.

They concurred on octagon-shaped posts that would occupy three to four pyong of land and be 500 meters apart. One pyong equals 3.3 square meters.

The officials also agreed that sentries should work only in the daytime, but failed to agree on exactly how many guards would man the posts.

The three-member South Korean side is headed by Col. Moon Sung-mook, while the same-numbered team of negotiators for the North is being led by Ryu Yong-chol.
