S-N Reunion Center Due at Mt. Geumgang
2003-11-07
South and North Korea on Thursday (Nov. 6) agreed to build a facility at Mt. Geumgang in the North by the middle of 2005, where separated families from the two Koreas will be able to meet.
The two Koreas also agreed to hold reunions three times per year.
The reunion center, which will occupy 6,000 pyong (one pyong is equivalent to 3.3 square meters) in the neighborhood of Onjeonggak, currently an amenity complex for South Korean tourists visiting the North Korean mountain, will include accommodation for visiting family members from the South.
The agreement to build the reunion center came at a meeting between representatives of the two Koreas' Red Crosses at Mt. Geumgang earlier in the day.
Under the agreement, construction will start sometime between April and May next year, and will be completed in one year.
Inside the reunion complex, the two sides will have separate 300 pyong offices.
The remaining 5,400 pyong will accommodate a large convention center for family reunions and condominiums for them to stay overnight, Red Cross officials said.
However, the two sides agreed to postpone the next round of reunions until sometime early next year. Their original plan was for another round of reunions before the end of this year.
In the next round of Red Cross meetings, the two sides are expected to increase correspondence between members of separated families.
The southern delegation returned home in the afternoon from Mt. Geumgang.
