Delegation Arrives in P'yang for Economic Talks
2003-11-06
The South Korean delegation on Wednesday (Nov. 5) embarked on the first day of their negotiations for the seventh Inter-Korean Economic Cooperation Promotion Committee meeting to be held for the next four days.
The five-member team, led by Vice Minister of Finance and Economy Kim Gwang-lim, arrived via Shenyang, China at Sunan Airport on a chartered flight with North Korean flag carrier Koryo Air.
The two sides will discuss the reconnection of roads and railways across the border and further development of the Gaeseong industrial complex and Mt. Geumgang tourism projects.
They will also discuss opening a direct trade channel between the two countries and review all forms of bilateral economic cooperation and discuss ways to lay the groundwork for sustainable development.
The five-member inspection team accompanied the representatives to check the distribution of South Korean rice around the North Korean capital.
Seoul have previously overseen the distribution of food, but it is the first time that a Southern delegation to inter-Korean talks will conduct an on-site inspection.
Seoul and Pyongyang agreed to hold the meeting after the 12th Inter-Korean Ministerial Talks ended in a virtual stalemate last month with the two Koreas failing to make progress on resolving the ongoing nuclear standoff.
