Inter-Korean Transportation Talks Begin
2003-08-22
Officials of the two Koreas on Thursday (Aug. 21) started working-level talks in the North Korean city of Gaeseong to work out details on the reconnection of railways and roads across the border.
Another inter-Korean meeting on the construction of a reunion center for separated families also started at Mt. Geumgang for a three-day run.
During the two-day transportation meeting, the two sides are expected to consult on such issues as signals and communication systems for two railways under construction, a Unification Ministry official said.
Earlier Thursday, a South Korean delegation crossed the border by bus en route to the North Korean city.
The South Korean delegates will travel to and from the North using their own vehicles via a temporary road built across the border on each day of the talks. In the past, South Koreans had to transfer to North Korean cars when they crossed the border.
The meetings at Gaeseong and Mt. Geumgang, originally scheduled for earlier this week, were postponed following the North's protest against the burning of its national flag during a rightwing demonstration in the South on Aug. 15.
