The Joint Chiefs of Staff released guidelines on Wednesday (Aug. 13) to prevent protesters from intruding on United States military sites.

According to the guidelines, Korean military units will monitor any rally planned near a U.S. compound to block any attempt by protesters to barge into the facility in close cooperation with the U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) and local police.

"The intrusion by some 'Hanchongnyon' members onto a U.S. firing range last Thursday and their subsequent demonstration atop an armored vehicle posed a serious threat to the South Korea-U.S. joint defense system," an officer from the Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

"The military sent the guidelines to army units in related areas to prevent a recurrence of such an incident."

The measures came after Prime Minister Goh Kun on Monday vowed to reinforce security around U.S. facilities during a dinner meeting with USFK commander Gen. Leon J. LaPorte.

In a related development, USFK conveyed its concerns to the Defense Ministry over an anti-American rally scheduled to be held at the main gate of the Yongsan garrison in Seoul on Saturday.

Around 2,000 people are expected to joint the demonstration.
