Number of Inter-Korean Shipping Gains 7.4 % in 1st Half of 2003

ROK Ministry of Unification

2003-08-01

The number of inter-Korean shipping operations in the first half of 2003 totaled 817 on a one-way basis, up 7.4 percent from a year earlier, and the quantity of goods carried came to 304,201 tons, down 15.3 percent from the previous year.

The increase in shipping operations is attributed to growing imports by South Korea of fishery products and other goods of commercial nature in addition to northbound shipping of materials and equipment for connecting trans-border railways and roads. The decrease in the quantity of goods transported was due to the reduction in fertilizers bound for the North by 28 percent to 56,000 tons and other goods of non-commercial nature like humanitarian assistance.

During the January-June period, the number of northbound shipments totaled 350 and that of the opposite direction 467. South Korean ports involved in order of shipping frequencies were Mukho, Incheon, Sokcho and Busan and those in North Korea were Haeju, Heungnam, Najin, Goseong and Wonsan.
