ROK, US to Hold Drill Sept. 18-29
2003-07-21
South Korea and the United States will conduct annual war games from Sept. 18-29 to test their preparedness, the ROK-U.S. Combined Forces Command (CFC) said on Monday (July 21).
The exercise, Ulchi Focus Lens (UFL), is a largely computer-simulated, command-post exercise designed to evaluate and improve combined and joint coordination, procedures, plans and systems to conduct contingency operations between South Korean and U.S. forces.
The joint drill this year will involve some 8,000 South Korean soldiers and 6,500 U.S. troops deployed in South Korea, along with troops sent here specifically for the exercise. The exercise started in 1976.
The CFC notified North Korea of the plan through the United Nations Command Military Armistice Commission (UNCMAC) on Monday morning.
