Hundreds of machine guns and rifles that Spanish authorities discovered and seized from a ROK cargo vessel in its territorial waters are legitimate export items, the Defense Ministry said Wednesday.
The announcement came a day after Spain said it seized 280 K1A machine guns, 100 K2 rifles and 760 ball cartridges from a container on a ship traveling from the Korean port city of Busan to Senegal.
"They are legitimate exports which were approved by the defense ministry," a senior ministry official said.
He said the ministry gave permission to Daewoo Precision Industries Co., a Busan-based firm, to ship the munitions on May 12.
"I speculate Spain's police checked the freighter, mistaking it for a North Korean boat," the official said.
