Separated Families Bid Farewell
2003-07-03
A group of 472 South Korean separated family members bid farewell to 100 elderly North Korean relatives on Wednesday (July 2) after a three-day reunion at Mt. Geumgang.
The South Korean delegation watched their Northern relatives leave the mountain's Onjeonggak Rest House in three buses before heading to the port of Jangjeon to board the cruise ship Seolbong for the journey back to the Southern port of Sokcho.
The South Koreans arrived Monday at the mountain to meet their Northern relatives for the first time since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War.
However, 73-year-old Kwak Ho-im was not able to bid a last farewell to her 76-year-old husband Lee Kyu-tae after she was taken away by ambulance south of the border to receive medical treatment after collapsing from fatigue.
The reunions followed Sunday's return of 100 elderly South Koreans to Sokcho after the completion of their three-day trip to Mt. Geumgang to meet their North Korean relatives.
