More Separated Families Meet at Mt. Geumgang
2003-07-01
A group of 472 South Koreans left for Mt. Geumgang on Monday (June 30) to hold reunions with 100 of their North Koreans relatives, separated by the Korean War. This is the second round of the seventh separated family reunions held following the inter-Korean summit in 2001.
The visit follows Sunday's return of 100 elderly South Koreans to the eastern port of Sokcho, Gangwon Province, after winding up a three-day trip to the mountain to meet their Northern relatives.
The cruise ship Seolbong left the port carrying a 690-member South Korean delegation including government and Red Cross officials and reporters bound for Jangjeon, a gateway to the North Korean mountain resort.
Among the 476 family members were 99-year-old Kim Yong-nyo, who is to meet with her 72-year-old son Kim Kyong-jong, and Kim Song-jun, a ten-year-old boy who is to meet his 72-year-old uncle Kim Kwan-soo in the North.
