Koreas to Hold Family Reunions
2003-06-16
South and North Korea agreed Saturday to hold the seventh round of family reunions between June 27 and July 2 at the North's Mt. Geumgang, the South's Korea National Red Cross said.
"We accepted the North's proposal for the reunions during the period," a Red Cross official said, adding that the decision was reached through liaison officers in the border village of Panmunjeom.
In the first phase, some 100 South Korean citizens will depart for the mountain resort on June 27 to meet their North Korean relatives, who will be waiting for them at the reunion center.
The event will be followed by another reunion for which the North will dispatch a new team of 100 senior citizens to Mt. Geumgang on June 30 to meet their South Korean kins who will arrive at the center on the same day.
Red Cross officials said they still needed to hammer out details of the reunions.
Through liaison officers on Sunday, the two sides exchanged the lists of elderly men and women who will take part in the events, as well as supporting personnel.
Six inter-Korean family reunions have been held since August 2000. They are considered one of the most tangible fruits of the two Koreas' rapprochement policies.
