S-N Talks Slated on Railways Reconnection
2003-06-03
South and North Korea agreed Monday to hold three days of working-level talks from Saturday to discuss a project to reconnect two sets of inter-Korean railways and roads.
The two Koreas made the agreement through telephone messages earlier in the day and are to discuss the delayed reconnection of the two cross-border railways and their adjacent roads in Gaesong, North Korea.
Seen as a major part of efforts to boost inter-Korean reconciliation, Seoul and Pyongyang agreed to reconnect two sets of railways and roads through the eastern and western sectors of the demilitarized zone (DMZ).
Work to clear land mines was completed in December last year as a preparatory step to reconnecting the railways severed during the 1950-1953 Korean War.
A South Korean delegation will enter the North via an overland route through the western side of the DMZ on its way to the North Korean city of Gaesong, just north of the truce village Panmunjeom.
