Wolfowitz Arrives in Seoul
2003-06-02
U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz arrived in Seoul Sunday (June 1) for a two-day visit for talks on the North Korean nuclear programs with officials.
The deputy defense secretary visited the ROK-U.S. Combined Forces Command (CFC), talked with U.S. soldiers based near the Demilitarized Zone and attended a dinner party hosted by Defense Minister Cho Young-kil.
Wolfowitz was met by some 50 protestors marched outside the CFC headquarters in Yongsan Garrison, Seoul, who held signs accusing Washington of increasing tensions with its hardline North Korea policy.
Wolfowitz will meet with Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Yoon Young-kwan and Cho Monday to exchange views on follow-up measures to last month's South Korea-U.S. summit, before paying a visit on President Roh Moo-hyun.
While in Singapore for the second Asia Security Conference Saturday, Wolfowitz said the United States hopes economic pressure on North Korea can end the nuclear standoff with the impoverished nation.
"The country is teetering on the edge of economic collapse," he said. "That I believe is a major point of leverage."
He added that the major difference between North Korea and Iraq is that there were no economic options to pressure the Middle Eastern country because of its abundance of oil.
