Int'l Meeting on Nuclear Imports Opens in Busan

2003-05-20

Nuclear supplier nations on Monday (May 19) started a meeting in Busan to agree on intensified monitoring measures to prevent North Korea from obtaining nuclear equipment and materials, officials said.

The Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), which holds its annual plenary meeting until Friday, will discuss international concerns about North Korea, which recently declared it already possesses nuclear arms and is reprocessing weapons-grade material.

At the end of last year, the 40-member NSG had added some 100 materials and technologies to a list of items banned from transfer to North Korea.

This year's plenary meeting will deal with reinforcing the ban and cooperation among member states to deter North Korea's nuclear ambitions, officials said.
