Two Koreas to Hold Sports Meet in July
2003-04-15
South and North Korea agreed to hold a joint sports event to strengthen ties in the inter-cultural exchange on Jeju Island in July.
Rep. Kim Won-wung released an agreement on Monday (April 14), signed with Jon Kum-jin, vice chairman of the North's Asia-Pacific Peace Committee, to hold a working level meeting on the specifics of the meet in May at Mt. Geumgang.
Kim, chairman of the People's Party for Reform, visited North Korea between April 7 to 12 to agree on the proposal he made with North Korea during his prior visit to North in February.
Kim, a reformist, explained that this was a civilian exchange but hopes to receive active support from the government.
Although Kim denied administration-level consent for the event, he explained that he met with Culture-Tourism Minister Lee Chang-dong on Monday and asked support from related government departments.
In the statement released simultaneously with the North Korea, it reads that the event is aimed at joining forces and pursuing peace and unification on the peninsula.
"We agreed to keep the event strictly civilian-based, not to be effected by political situations," Kim said. "I hope this will contribute to peace on the peninsula."
