Roh, Bush Confirm Peaceful Resolution of NK Row

2003-04-07

President Roh Moo-hyun and U.S. President George W. Bush re-confirmed on Friday (April 4) their intention to work out the international standoff over North Korea's nuclear development program peacefully, Roh's spokeswoman Song Kyoung-hee said Sunday (April 6).

In a 20-minute telephone talk, Bush promised to resolve the nuclear issue through diplomacy and said a peaceful solution would be possible, she said.

Song quoted Roh as repeating Seoul's position to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue peacefully through dialogue.

The U.S. president said that he was looking forward to meeting Roh during the latter's visit to Washington in May.

Bush expressed gratitude for South Korean parliament's passing of a bill on sending noncombat troops to support the U.S.-led war in Iraq, Song said.

On Wednesday, the National Assembly passed the controversial bill to send about 670 engineering and medical troops to the Middle East country despite strong opposition from civic groups.

The telephone talk was the second in as many months. On March 13, the two presidents talked over the phone to confirm their principle of solving the nuclear issue peacefully through diplomatic efforts, based on close bilateral consultation.
