Suspected Al-Qaeda-Linked Militants Killed In Pakistan's Punjab Province

November 07, 2020

Two suspected Al-Qaeda-linked militants have been killed by Pakistan's counterterrorism police in an overnight operation in eastern Punjab Province, officials said.

In a statement on November 7, police said the militants had plans to carry out "subversive activities" in the district of Dera Ghazi Khan.

The intelligence-based operation was under way at the militants' hideout in the Choti Bala area when they opened fire on the raiding party, triggering a shoot-out, said Imran Asghar, a counterterrorism official.

He said that two other militants escaped and police seized arms and ammunition.

The Dera Ghazi Khan district is where three of Pakistan's provinces -- Balochistan, Sindh, and Punjab -- meet, and northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province is not far away.

Militants from insurgency-wracked Balochistan and fighters linked to the banned Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehreek-e Taliban Pakistan, often take shelter in the district.
